Criminology

The scientific study of crime and criminals, looking at the reasons for criminal behaviour.

This course is designed for anyone with an enquiring mind, an interest in the cause and effect of crime and victimisation and how society responds to crime. You will learn about the concepts, theories and perspectives which characterise criminology, whilst also gaining an understanding of business and law.

The programme will help you use your skills, knowledge and experience to make a difference to the society that we live in. You will gain an overview of social science perspectives and an introduction to the exploration of different approaches to crime and behaviour.

 

English & Maths

If you haven’t achieved a GCSE Grade 4 (C) in English and/or Maths you will be required to either; take a Functional Skills qualification if you have achieved a Grade 1 or 2, or retake the GCSE if you’ve achieved Grade 3. You will be fully supported by our specialist team ahead of taking the exam.

You will receive an introduction to a range of concepts and theories within criminology, which will be applied to a range of issues relevant to your own interests.

Units include Aspects of Crime and Criminal Justice System, Crime and Social Groups, as well as Investigating a Career.

After successfully completing this course you will be able to progress onto the Crime & Society Academy at Scarborough TEC, before studying areas such as law, sociology or psychology at university or gaining employment within the sector.
