About the Certificate in Education – Lifelong Learning (Part-time) course

The course provides our trainee teachers with the knowledge, resilience and passion to succeed as teachers in the lifelong learning sector. We aim for our trainees to be armed with the skills they need to make teaching their own lifelong career.

The lifelong learning sector has gone through significant changes through the previous years and, as such, it has struggled to find a place in the UK educational system. The introduction of the ETF Professional Standards has helped to define the professional requirements necessary to outline teaching within this diverse sector. This course is underpinned by these ETF standards and, as such, are embedded within all that we do.

The part-time programme is suitable for those wanting to pursue a career in teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector; that is teaching students age 14 years and above. The programme is part-time and suitable for those who are currently employed in a teaching role.

This is a two-year course.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will require Level 3 qualification in subject specialist area and GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 (or equivalent) or a Level 3 qualification in any area and 2 years’ experience in their proposed field of teaching and GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 (or equivalent).

Applicants must be in work (paid or otherwise) delivering substantial teaching or training in a related sector to participate in this programme.  Their organisation must support the programme through provision of time to attend the sessions and in the supply of a mentor for the trainee.

An enhanced DBS is required before the programme commences.

All candidates will be interviewed.

What you will learn

Year 1 modules:

Year 2 modules:

  • Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact
  • Reflective Practice for Professional Development

Learning & Teaching Methods

Delivery will be 1 evening per week.  Sessions will blend approaches to delivery of theory and practice.  Teaching will begin in a didactic style gradually moving towards a trainee led approach. Trainee lived experience will be used to develop reflective and teaching skills. Trainees will be studying alongside others at different levels, this will be taken in to account using differentiated objectives during tasks and activities in the classroom

Each trainee will need a mentor from their own organisation who, following training, will support the trainee in their practice. The role of the mentor will be to provide support for the student in their particular curriculum area. The mentor will observe the student four times during their course of study from a subject specialist perspective.

The trainees will also be observed in their own teaching practice four times per year by a tutor from TEC Partnership and given supportive and developmental feedback. These observations, along with their conduct and teaching file will contribute towards their final teaching grade.

Assessment will have an emphasis on building confidence in presenting skills and on reflective practice.

What next?

Following this course, trainees can progress into a professional teaching role within the Lifelong Learning Sector. This course also allows for progression to QTLS status.
