About the FdSc Digital Design course

Creating digital design-based solutions can be inventive, elegant, and rewarding.  Taking a problem from a client or business then designing and producing a solution is not only professionally satisfying but in high demand in all areas of business, locally, nationally and across the world.

Our FdSc Digital Design, offered in collaboration with Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology, will prepare you for working in a digital design studio, with the technical, professional, and interpersonal skills required to be successful in this field.

Digital design studios exist in most sectors or individuals are employed or work freelance across most industries, from manufacturing, education, marketing, publishing, to entertainment including TV, film, and games.

As a graduate from this course you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills required to enter a studio with expertise in static graphics and illustrations, interactive and immersive design, and with a portfolio of practical work which will evidence your skills and talents for future employment.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry requirement for the FdSc Digital Design will be 80 UCAS points, with a minimum of grade 4/C in GCSE, or equivalent qualification, in English and Maths.

What you will learn

Level 4 (Certificate Stage)

You will study the following modules:

  • Introduction to Creative Technologies
  • Introduction to Professional Practice and Study Skills
  • Digital Graphic and Illustration
  • Design for Video Production and Digital Photography
  • Front End Web Design
  • UI and UX Design

All modules are worth 20 credits.

Level 5 (Foundation Degree Stage)

You will study the following modules:

  • 3D Design and Animation
  • Design Practice in Creative Industries
  • Immersive Design and Technologies
  • Digital Imaging
  • Applied Digital Design Project

All modules are worth 20 credits except Applied Digital Design Project which is worth 40 credits.

Learning & Teaching Methods

Most modules will be taught through practical workshops, with seminars also taking place in our Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology Digital Arts studio, in the format of interactive demonstrations as you work through emerging creative technologies to increase autonomy as your knowledge and confidence increases.

Emerging independence is encouraged as your student group will grasp concepts at different points and freedom will be allowed to explore with guidance from the Programme Leader.

Experience insight into the real-world of Digital Design through a teaching team of industry practitioners who actively create rigorous and robust links within the industry, both locally and further afield.

What next?

As a graduate from this programme, you will have an exciting portfolio of work demonstrating a range of skills in several disciplines and be employment-ready with expert skills in at least one chosen field such as graphic design, 3D modelling, and video editing. You will have worked to client briefs, developed interpersonal skills, and have a professional approach valued in the industry.

As a graduate from this programme you could also choose to study a further year and top-up to a full undergraduate degree in Digital Design. We are currently committed to the development of a top-up programme to follow our FdSc Digital Design.
