Scarborough School of Arts prepares to unveil the Costume Show 2017

Scarborough School of Arts students from Scarborough TEC’s BA (Hons) Historical and Performance Costume for Stage and Screen are busy preparing for the final showcase of their creative talents as they host the Costume Show on Friday 2nd June, exhibiting their stunning portfolios to VIPS, other students and the general public.

The annual event has become a highlight in the industry’s calendar and this year, the 14th Costume Show at Scarborough School of Arts’ Theatre in the Round, is the final time the event will be held at the college’s Westwood Campus as they relocate to Scarborough TEC’s new home at Filey Road from September 2017.

One exhibiting student, Dan Willis, 26, originally enrolled at the college on an Art & Design course because he wanted a career in Graphic Design or Web Development. For that course’s final show he designed a miniature three-piece suit which developed a passion for menswear and led to Dan enrolling onto the degree programme. Dan said:

“The whole of the three years runs up to the final Costume Show and it involves everyone as we have to do our own fundraising and produce the project ourselves; sourcing the music, props, arranging lighting and putting up the exhibition etc.

“As a group we came up with a number of themes but we didn’t want it to be too film-based, so we came up with a storytelling theme that covers many different areas. The audience can simply expect an amazing night.  You won’t see something like this anywhere else and everyone’s work is so individual to them; there’s an 8 foot monster, a ghost, a tudor dress and even a pink elephant! I’ve chosen Dr Who because it’s my absolute favourite; I’m obsessed.

“I’m hoping to be able to go into theatre or film, my daughter is only five at the moment so I may have to wait a bit for that.”

The Costume Show 2017 takes place on Friday June 2nd at 7pm at the Westwood Campus, Valley Bridge in Scarborough.  For more information or to book your tickets simply email Sarah Wood at [email protected].

There will be a drinks reception after the show and an opportunity to meet with our fantastic costume designers and makers.

The students have also organised a static exhibition where visitors will be able to view the work of BA (Hons) Fine Art and BA (Hons) Historical and Performance Costume for Stage and Screen.  The exhibition is free to the general public and is running at the Westwood Campus on Saturday 3rd June from 10am-1pm and Monday 5th – Friday 9th from 10am-4pm.
