Engineering Skills

About This Course

Our practical and hands-on Engineering courses are based in our state-of-the-art Automotive, Construction and Engineering Centre. They are designed to allow you to gain vital skills, using hi-tech and innovative equipment including conventional and computer-controlled machines, a computer-aided design suite, excellent welding facilities and an electronics laboratory. There has never been a more exciting time to get into engineering. The industry as a whole in our area is set to grow, with many exciting opportunities in the pipeline meaning there is a future need for skilled engineers. We have a proven track record of working with local employers to help them train the next generation of engineers, meaning you will gain the skills you need to succeed in your future career.

What You Will Learn

You will get the chance to learn about all aspects of the industry, as all courses adopt a multi-discipline approach to engineering that helps you decide which branch you would like to follow. You will also future proof your skills by learning about green technologies such as pneumatic and hydraulic machinery, using our new, innovative kit in our dedicated hydraulics workshop.

Entry Requirements

Level 1 – You will require GCSEs grades 1/2 or equivalent, including Foundation Awards and Entry Level Certificates.
Level 2 – You will require a minimum of 3 GCSEs grade 2/3, or above, including English or Maths.
Level 3 – Successful completion of a Level 2 within your chosen subject area, plus minimum 4 GCSEs grade 4 or above including English and Maths.

ENGLISH & MATHS
If you haven’t achieved a GCSE Grade 4 (C) in English and/or Maths, you will be required to either; take a Functional Skills qualification if you have achieved a Grade 1 or 2, or retake the GCSE if you’ve achieved Grade 3. You will be fully supported by our specialist team.

Work Experience

There is an expectation each learner will undertake work experience, This can be arranged by the learner with the help of the college team to ensure that the placement is maintaining a safe working environment or potentially work experience may be offered through the colleges companies already providing placements for apprentices.

Trips, Visits & Guest Speakers

As part of the study Programme, learners will have the opportunity to visit relevant work environments and/or manufacturers to gain an understanding of the processes of the industry. Parental/guardian permission for trip is essential and will be sought at the beginning of the course to prevent delays or disappointment.

What Next?

During your course, we ensure you develop employability skills and gain the relevant experience for your next steps. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into further study.When applying for university, we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance. Once you’ve completed a Level 3 qualification, you could progress into employment or further your studies with the HNC in Engineering at Scarborough TEC.
