Games Design

About This Course

Over two years, you will work as an individual and as part of a team on project briefs designed to develop your skillset toward three main career paths:
Games Conceptualisation: The skill of researching ideas and generating games. You will develop skills in research and idea generation to create new games concepts or redevelop current ones. You will be expected to create stories, characters and plan things like cut scenes that make up a game. This leads to lots of transferable skills between games, TV and movies.

Games Art – Art is one of the pivotal games careers. It visualises what the game will look like down to the characters, items and landscapes. As a games artist, you would branch out into many different specialisms. Whilst these can also be transferred into other creative media, you will need to have grounding in art to become a games artist. You will study a mix of 2D and 3D art, animation and concept art.

Game Development – Whilst the careers above create the wonderful worlds you see in games, the developers are the glue that bind them together and make them work. As a developer, you would build up your coding skills through the use of specialist game engines. You will learn to how to create pseudo code, flow diagrams, Unreal Engine and Unity.
This course will provide you with practical knowledge and experience and, by working through projects designed and created by industry professionals, you will learn the techniques and skills required and used by industry. In your first year, you will sample skills from all three paths, showing understanding of a games build, then you will attempt an individual build based on your chosen path. In year two, you will continue to develop professionally, whilst working towards a major, studio-based project.

This is a course with multiple destinations for students, but at its heart it is defined by the skills that the creative industries of games, animation and VFX need for future innovation and growth. It’s much more than just a qualification – it’s the start of a career journey.
