Media Make-Up
If you have a keen interest in the entertainment industry, but see yourself in a backstage role, our Media Make-up course could be just what you’re looking for.Being part of the media make-up team at Scarborough TEC will give you the opportunity to prepare performers and models for photoshoots, stage, film and TV. Media make-up is more than just applying make-up, you will need to be skilled in applying looks that translate well on screen and stage, stand up against harsh lighting and, now more than ever, look impeccable on HD TV and increasingly advanced photographic equipment.You will learn the art of fashion and photographic make-up, hair artistry, lash and brow treatments, body art design techniques, theatrical character make-up, SFX casualty special effects, prosthetic making and application and the creation of facial postiche.Work experience will play a key role in the course and could include placements on fashion shoots, theatre productions, local events and clinical/emergency settings within the NHS and emergency services. You will create a professional, industry-ready portfolio which will showcase your work and designs and the progression you have made as an up-and-coming make-up artist. You will also have the option to take part in local and national competitions, showcasing your skills and gaining an opportunity to network with other artists.Throughout the year, there will be the opportunity to attend masterclasses and workshops delivered by industry specialists and guest speakers. Excursions to industry trades shows will also form part of your course experience.

Level 3
At Level 2, you could study: •Principles of working in the make-up industry•Anatomy and physiology for make-up artists•Principles of researching, developing and showcasing designs•The art of applying make-up•Hair artistry•Creative make-up artistry.At Level 3, you could study: •Cutting and styling techniques for performers•Avant-garde hair and make-up•Creative make-up design for productions and industry demands•Apply prosthetics pieces and bald caps•Special effects make-up•Create, dress and fit facial postiche•Body art for competition•Camouflage make-up•Create and cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps•Costume design and prop making.
Level 2 – You will require 3 GCSEs grade 3 or above including Maths and English. Level 3 – You will require a Level 2 Media Make-up qualification and 4 GCSEs grade 4 or above including Maths and English. ENGLISH & MATHS If you haven’t achieved a GCSE Grade 4 (C) in English and/or Maths, you will be required to either; take a Functional Skills qualification if you have achieved a Grade 1 or 2, or retake the GCSE if you’ve achieved Grade 3. You will be fully supported by our specialist team.
Work experience is mandatory to this course. Learners will help plan and be involved in a variety of events throughout the year.
Industry week with demonstrations from local employers and guest artists. In house and national competitions including World Skills. Trips to Hair and Beauty UK, Salon International, Bodyworks. Masterclasses in film production and mortician make-up.
During your course, we ensure you develop employability skills and gain the relevant experience for your next steps. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into further study. Upon successful completion of the Level 3 course, there is an opportunity to progress onto degree-level study at Scarborough TEC via the Higher National Diploma in Make-up Artistry in the Creative Industries.
