As an Apprentice Engineer, you will be trained to:
Use information technology to create and manage documentation, produce reports, and communicate effectively across the business.
Read, interpret, and apply technical documentation, including drawings, manuals, specifications, and work instructions to support maintenance and engineering tasks.
Carry out planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance on a range of systems, including electrical, mechanical, fluid power, and control systems.
Plan and organise maintenance activities, selecting the appropriate tools, materials, and resources, while working to timescales and quality standards.
Apply health and safety regulations, including risk assessments, isolation procedures, and safe systems of work, ensuring a safe working environment at all times.
Develop fault-finding and diagnostic skills to identify and resolve issues on complex equipment and engineered systems.
Maintain accurate records and documentation, including job sheets, service logs, test results, and technical reports, supporting compliance and asset management.

Portland Grain, located in Barmby Moor, York, is a modern facility with the capacity to store up to 40,000 tonnes of cereals and food/feed crops. Our site provides flexible storage options for wheat, barley, oilseeds, and pulses, using flat stores or silos, with efficient bulk container loading via weighbridge.
We handle and monitor all grain in line with the Trade Assurance Scheme for Combinable Crops (TASCC), ensuring the highest standards of quality and traceability. Our fully equipped TASCC-approved laboratory allows for comprehensive testing and analysis of all products, giving our customers confidence that grain integrity is maintained from intake to outloading.
