Apprentice Mechanical Technician

Are you passionate about engineering, innovation, and problem-solving? FET is seeking a motivated and dedicated Apprentice Mechanical Technician to join our expert team at our Kirkbymoorside facility. You will work hands-on assembling and testing mechanical and hydraulic components used in our cutting-edge subsea products.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Under the guidance of experienced mentors, you’ll gain practical skills in mechanical assembly, basic wiring, testing, and workshop maintenance. You will play a crucial role in building products that are trusted by industries worldwide.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assemble mechanical components for subsea systems, including pumps, valves, and tooling
  • Learn and assist in basic electrical and hydraulic testing and assembly
  • Collaborate closely with mentors and supervisors to ensure high-quality output
  • Support workshop maintenance and maintain excellent housekeeping standards
  • Accurately complete required documentation (e.g., timesheets, non-conformance reports)
  • Follow all health, safety, and environmental guidelines

What We’re Looking For:

Education:

  • A minimum of 6 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including maths and Design Technology (preferred)

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Attention to detail and willingness to learn
  • A problem-solving mindset and a positive, proactive attitude
  • Interest in developing practical skills with tools and machinery

Experience:

  • No prior experience needed – full training provided

Course contents

  • Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
  • Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
  • Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
  • Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
  • Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
  • Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
  • Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
  • Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
  • Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
  • Reporting work outcomes or issues.
  • Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
  • Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
  • Operating within limits of responsibility.
  • Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

  • Engineering Fitter Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard
  • Work based and one day release based at Scarborough TEC College

Qualifications

Essential qualifications

  • GCSE 6 GCSEs preferably including Maths, DT (Grade 4) essential
