About this course

About this apprenticeship

Fitters may specialise in mechanical, electrical, electronic, control systems, pipe fitting or instrumentation work. They interpret drawings and specifications, plan tasks, select the correct tools and materials, complete work to required standards and inspect and adjust finished products.

Fitters may work independently or as part of a team in workshops, customer sites or hazardous environments, working with supervisors, engineers, quality teams and customers.

They are responsible for completing work safely, accurately and on time while following health, safety, quality and environmental requirements with minimal supervision.

This Level 3 apprenticeship has an approximate duration of 42 months and delivery is on a day-release college mode from the Scarborough TEC, Filey Road, Scarborough, YO11 3AZ.

What you Will Learn

  • Understand different materials, their properties, applications, costs and suitability for components and assemblies
  • Understand design principles, manufacturing and assembly processes, and how to minimise waste and improve productivity
  • Safely use and maintain hand and power tools, selecting the correct equipment for each task
  • Interpret drawings, specifications, work instructions, diagrams and technical documentation accurately
  • Use engineering maths, measurements, testing equipment and data to manufacture and inspect components accurately
  • Apply quality standards and complete checks to ensure components meet required tolerances and specifications
  • Follow health and safety, environmental and waste-management procedures, including PPE, COSHH and risk assessments
  • Plan tasks effectively, managing materials, tools, equipment, time and resources
  • Identify faults, solve problems and contribute to continuous improvement using techniques such as 5 Whys, 5S and Kaizen
  • Communicate effectively, work well within a team, take responsibility for work and continually develop skills and knowledge.

What Next?

On completion of this programme, apprentices will be a fully qualified and experienced Engineering fitter. Allowing progression onto Level 4 apprenticeships such as Engineering Manufacturing Technician.
