About this course

About this apprenticeship

Port Operatives work across ports, harbours and marinas, supporting trade, defence, energy, passenger travel and recreation. They help move cargo safely and efficiently between ships, vehicles, trains, warehouses and storage areas. Cargo can include vehicles, food, manufactured goods and raw materials, with duties varying depending on the port, vessel and type of cargo.

Operatives may use specialist lifting equipment and vehicles, such as forklifts, cranes and other port machinery. In larger ports, operatives may specialise, while smaller ports often require a wider range of skills and responsibilities. They may also support passenger operations, helping ferry and cruise passengers move safely through the port while providing good customer service.

The role can involve working onboard vessels and in physically demanding outdoor environments, often in poor weather. Shift work, weekends, unsocial hours and on-call duties may be required, with some roles subject to entry restrictions.
