About this apprenticeship

Key responsibilities include route planning, ensuring deliveries are on time and cost-effective, communicating with customers and providing accurate delivery updates. They brief and debrief drivers, ensure the correct documentation is provided and support compliance with drivers’ hours, working time and vehicle maintenance requirements.

Traffic Operators work closely with drivers, traffic planners, managers, hauliers and customers, typically in a busy office-based environment. They help maintain safe, efficient and compliant transport operations while keeping up to date with relevant legislation, regulations and industry best practice. The role may involve shift work and unsocial hours.

This Level 2 apprenticeship is wholly work based and delivered through independent study and workplace visits by a Vocational Trainer Coach.

What you Will Learn

  • Follow transport, drivers’ hours, health and safety legislation, company policies and operating procedures
  • Plan and prioritise deliveries, collections, multiple-drop routes and backloads efficiently
  • Input, track and update customer jobs and delivery information using relevant systems
  • Re-plan routes and operations quickly when faced with delays, road closures, accidents, weather or changing customer needs
  • Optimise routes, vehicle types and loads to control costs and reduce environmental impact
  • Maintain accurate electronic and paper documentation, while following GDPR and cybersecurity requirements
  • Arrange vehicle maintenance and inspections and ensure transport operations remain compliant
  • Brief and debrief drivers, communicate professionally and manage customer queries and complaints
  • Escalate issues appropriately, including driver infringements, operational problems and matters outside own authority
  • Demonstrate customer focus, teamwork, professionalism, adaptability, safety awareness, sustainability, inclusion and commitment to learning.
