Humber Maritime College launched by MODAL Training

MODAL Training and the TEC Partnership, Scarborough TEC’s umbrella organisation, are delighted to announce the launch of Humber Maritime College.

Developed over the past two years and launching in September 2019, the MNTB and MCA approved college will provide full cadet programmes for those aiming to enter the Merchant Navy as officers.

Initially starting with a cadetship for Engineering Officers, cadets will study a variety of qualifications over a three-year period, including the higher national certificate/diploma in marine engineering and required STCW qualifications.

An applied learning approach will use classroom, simulator and blended learning activities to immerse cadets in fostering and developing the skills they need to become successful officers in the Merchant Navy.

Specialist marine lectures will take place at Humber Maritime College, based within the MODAL Training centre in Immingham, while engineering workshops activity will be held at the Ofsted outstanding Grimsby Institute, a partner college of Scarborough TEC.

The cadetship is fully sponsored by employers, with all academic fees for their higher education qualification paid for and the cadets will also be earning a wage while they learn. Engineering officers are specialists in the operation of maritime vessels, making sure the technical equipment such as pumps, engines and propulsion systems on the ship are safe and working properly.

Humber Maritime College has a full range of marine simulators which will be integrated in to the cadetship, providing a way for cadets to experience and learn on marine engines and engineering systems during their onshore study phases.

This allows them to get a feel for the working environment and to practise a wide variety of scenarios, in preparation for a career at sea.

Humber Maritime College will be holding an open event at Scarborough TEC on Thursday 2^ndMay from 4pm to 7pm.  All are welcome and potential cadets, parents and carers will be able to meet the team as well meeting people from the maritime sector.
