Students and staff celebrate new start at Construction & Engineering Centre

Students and staff at Scarborough TEC are celebrating their new start at the Filey Road Campus after their relocation from Lady Edith’s Drive into the new Construction & Engineering centre. The centre has been part-funded with a £3.345m Skills Capital grant from the Government’s Local Growth Fund secured through the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership.

Simon Gummerson, Head of Construction & Engineering at Scarborough TEC, said: “This is a fantastic time for us. Moving into the new building is a brilliant way to start 2019 and both the staff and students have been incredibly positive about their new home.

“The new centre will be used by students and Apprentices who are studying for a wide variety of careers including Motor Vehicle, Bricklaying, Plumbing, Electrical Installation, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Construction and Carpentry & Joinery.

“The workshops and equipment the students now have access to are going to give them a competitive edge when it comes to applying for jobs in industry.”

Minister for the Northern Powerhouse and Local Growth, Jake Berry MP, said:

“This government is committed to boosting economic growth across the whole of the Northern Powerhouse and building an economy which is fit for the future.

“This investment of more than £3m from the Local Growth Fund will provide new state-of-the-art facilities for students, helping them develop skills in the construction and engineering sectors.

“Not only will this new centre boost employment prospects for local young people, it also supports business growth by developing a highly skilled workforce that meets the needs of the local and wider economy.”

Dr Ruth Smith, chair of the Skills and Employability Board at the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Enterprise Partnership commented: “The investment at Scarborough demonstrates perfectly what the LEP is seeking to achieve with our local Skills Capital investments.

“The new centre focuses on providing skills and training that are in the most demand locally, most notably: construction, manufacturing and health and social care. We are investing to ensure that our learners have access to the very latest technology and skills that will in turn benefit our local businesses.”

The one-storey building includes;

  • Electrical Workshop
  • Engineering Workshop
  • Fabrication & Welding Workshop
  • Plumbing Workshop
  • Brickwork Workshop
  • Joinery Workshop
  • Joinery Machine Workshop
  • Motor Vehicle Workshop

Ann Hardy, Principal of Scarborough TEC, explained the reasons for the centre being an important addition to the Filey Road Campus: “Our vision for Scarborough TEC to be a leading education and training provider in our region saw us relocate the majority of our services from Lady Edith’s Drive and Westwood Campuses in September 2017 and this is the exciting next step in our journey.

“It has always been our aim to consolidate all of our provision onto one site and this means that all of our courses will now be delivered from one, centrally-located campus.  I would like to thank everyone who has been part of this venture and especially the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding LEP; without their support this would never have been possible for our students.”
