What is an Apprenticeship?

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a real job with training which allows your child to learn, gain experience and get paid. Apprentices are employees with a contract of employment and holiday leave.

Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete and cover 1,500 job roles in a wide range of industries, from Engineering to Administration or Hairdressing to Accountancy.

Apprenticeships are now available up to degree level and beyond.

Entry Requirements:

Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16, living in England. There are different entry requirements depending on the sector and job.

Salaries

The minimum wage for apprentices is £5.28 per hour (as of April 2023), but many employers pay more than this. The average gross weekly wage for an apprentice is £200. This is dependent on the sector, region and apprenticeship level e.g. some Higher Apprenticeships can pay as much as £300 – £500 per week.

Applying for an Apprenticeship

There are up to 20,000 Apprenticeship vacancies available on apprenticeships.org.uk in a variety of careers and industries across England.

Simply click on ‘find an apprenticeship‘ and search by type, level or keywords.

Once the right job comes up, your child can select which apprenticeship they would like and then click ‘Apply For Job’ at the bottom of the vacancy, where they can then click the link to apply directly through the .gov website.
