The FdA Community Care in Practice has been designed for those who are currently working or want to work in community care. This foundation degree meets the diverse needs of the local and national communities, and as a result, students will study a range of topics that will prepare them for a non-clinical career in community health.
An integral part of the programme is the 80 hours of placement undertaken by each student. Whilst on placement, students will experience professional work through a variety of community care or health-related settings. Students will record, reflect and monitor their growth and individual professional expertise to tailor their own career and academic progression.
Scarborough TEC is a small friendly college that is part of the TEC Partnership. Scarborough TEC is dedicated to the progression of students and offers progression routes in health from entry-level to foundation degree. By choosing to study higher education at Scarborough TEC, you will experience the benefits of studying in a small, friendly environment whilst also being part of a larger, innovative organisation.

Applicants will require 80 UCAS points, with a minimum of grade ‘4’ in GCSE English or equivalent (Functional Skills Literacy Level 2 or Adult Literacy Level 2), and a grade ‘4’ in GCSE Maths or equivalent (Functional Skills Numeracy Level 2 or Adult Numeracy Level 2).
Non-standard offer
The TEC Partnership will also encourage applications from non-traditional learners who lack formal academic qualifications. All such non-traditional applicants will be interviewed, set an appropriate piece of work (entry assignment) and a judgement made taking into account their academic potential and relevant experience.
Accreditation of prior learning Applicants may be admitted with credit for prior certificated learning (APcL) or work/life experience or other uncertificated learning (APeL) – refer to TEC Partnership Admissions Policy.
The teaching and learning methods in the programme will allow the students to encounter and practice a range of different ways of studying such as independent research, group projects, practical assessments, real-world scenarios and using appropriate resources including AI. All approaches will relate to those commonly used within community care and health services. This will include new technologies such as health apps and data analysis software.
Modules will be designed to embed key themes which link and develop to synthesise learning experiences in a connected and applied way.
The teaching and learning approach for the programme will focus on student-centred lectures, seminars, workshops and practical sessions.
Students are encouraged to engage in reflective practice throughout their programmes. Supported by relevant academic literature on reflective learning, students are guided towards appropriate techniques in reflective learning during one-to-one tutorials and within relevant lectures.
This programme provides a unique educational pathway for a non-traditional learner demographic. This programme promotes the integration of the college in to the wider community. It will develop work-ready skills by utilising small group sizes to help develop soft skills and produce a work-ready graduate. The programme also provides students the opportunity to engage in industry-recognised CPD.
We try to keep the application process as simple as possible, but it’s important that you apply as soon as you’ve chosen your course so that we can arrange your interview and get you started on the admissions process.
On completing the foundation degree students are qualified to Level 5 and are ready to enter the workforce in a variety of settings within the community in private, public or third sector in a variety of roles.
With an FdA in Community Care in Practice, you can progress onto a range of further studies including a full Bachelor’s degree in health and social care, community development or specialise further with a postgraduate qualification in a specific area of community care, such as dementia care or disability support depending on your career aspirations. You can also explore career paths like a community care worker, care coordinator, or support worker.
